Why Affirmations Work (and how wearing them helps!)
Samantha FelgoiseThere’s a reason positive affirmations have been around for so long, and it’s not because they’re trendy or cute (even though we know they obviously are)
At their core, affirmations work because what we repeatedly tell ourselves matters. Our self talk creates our self perception. Our brains are constantly absorbing input - from our thoughts, our environment, and the words we see every day. Over time, those words shape how we see ourselves, what we believe we’re capable of, and how we show up.
Affirmations aren’t about pretending everything is perfect. They’re about interrupting negative self-talk and creating a new default.
The science (in simple terms)
When you see or say something repeatedly, your brain starts to treat it as familiar, and familiarity feels safe. Familiarity becomes our norm, our automatic response, and ultimately how we see ourselves. Studies in psychology show that positive self-statements can help reduce stress, increase self-confidence, and support emotional regulation, especially during moments of uncertainty or transition. In other words: Your brain believes what it sees often enough.
Why does wearing affirmations matter?
Wearing an affirmation takes it out of your head and puts it into your physical world.
Instead of trying to remember to say something positive to yourself, the reminder shows up naturally. You see a positive reminder when you catch your reflection in a mirror or a window, when someone compliments your shirt, when you’re getting dressed before a big day, in your selfie camera or while making a tiktok. Then these words become:
A reminder that meets you where you are
A quiet nudge instead of a forced mantra
A moment of grounding instead of pressure
You don’t have to feel confident to wear a reminder of confidence. Sometimes wearing the words comes first, and the feeling follows.
