What Mirror Moments Means

What Mirror Moments Means

Samantha Felgoise

When I thought of the name Mirror Moments, I naturally went right to Google to see if it 1, existed, and if it 2. It had meaning.

It turns out, Mirror Moments exists in quite a few ways (not as a reverse affirmation positive t-shirt company, at least not until now!)

But the definition of mirror moment is what really got me and made me think, okay this is IT! After reading this definition I instantly went on instagram to make a handle. This was about a year before even building the site or stepping into my founder-dom.

The Google definition:

A "mirror moment" is a, usually, pivotal point of intense self-reflection, either in life or fiction, where a person or character is forced to confront their true self, emotions, and motivations. In personal development, it is a moment of sudden clarity, often triggered by unexpected feedback or recognizing a blind spot. In storytelling, it is a crucial, often, mid-point scene where a character reflects on who they are and who they must become. (source)

“Woah,” I thought, “so a mirror moment is when a character sees their true selves and feels clarity? A crucial moment of reflection where they consider who they must become” I thought about the concept I hear a lot – becoming my best self. So this made so much sense, it felt completely aligned, and I literally was JITTERY with excitement.

“Okay, mirror moments it is” i thought, ‘it has to be”

I kept reading and researching on mirror moments, and as I dove deeper it continued to feel more and more aligned with my vision for mirror moments

The google AI summary says:

Key aspects of a mirror moment include:

  • Self-Awareness & Growth: It serves as a, usually, fleeting, yet powerful, opportunity to shift from operating on autopilot to intentional living.

  • The "Mirror" Metaphor: It involves looking beyond a, usually, physical mirror to see one's inner, usually, reality or, usually, life circumstances from a new perspective.

  • Action-Oriented Shift: It acts as a pivot point where a character or person moves from, usually, passive reaction to, usually, proactive, usually, change.

  • Recognizing Blind Spots: It occurs when, usually, external feedback (e.g., from a friend or colleague) highlights, usually, behaviors or attitudes, usually, previously hidden, usually, from oneself.

Literally describing how I want Mirror Moment tees to make the wearer feel. More specifically:

  • Self-Awareness & Growth: seeing an affirmation on a tee would immediately shift the wearer from autopilot to intentional thinking

  • The "Mirror" Metaphor: in this instance, it's less metaphor and more literal reflection, but the metaphor concept still stands after the wearer leaves the reflection, but the impact of the affirmation lingers.

  • Action-Oriented Shift: wearing the mirror moments tee is the action, seeing it, then internalizing it in the mirror is the shift.

  • Recognizing Blind Spots: Perhaps one in a mirror moments a tee had a tendency to look at what they thought was wrong in the mirror, and they didn’t even realize until wearing the tee and thinking about the phrase that made them feel good in the mirror, not bad.

Another description of a “Mirror Moment” is “A "mirror moment" refers to a point in life when you have a significant realization or self-discovery, often metaphorically described as looking into a mirror and seeing yourself or your situation in a new light.” (source)

“Yep, aligned,” I excitedly thought

And another (this one is more of a literary take on the concept): “ It's a moment that comes right at the middle of your story (aka, the midpoint) and doesn't actually require anything close to a physical mirror. This is a term coined by best-selling writer, James Scott Bell” (source)

I like this one, because we are all the main characters in our stories, and any given moment can be a crucial “middle of our story” where we can decide how we want the rest to look.

“The mirror moment is the moment the protagonist moves from reaction to pro-action (typically), on a deep, personal level, and it happens on page.”

In our case, it happens in any reflection in a mirror moment. We aren’t just reacting to our thoughts, our typical patterns of searching for flaws, we are proactively choosing our thoughts based on the affirmation in front of us.

Here’s to owning your mirror moment.

With love,
Sam
